The recent flooding in China’s Henan province has shocked the world. 31 dams in the area have surpassed the warning level and Chinese authorities are actively releasing flood waters to alleviate the dams. But at the same time, this exacerbates the situation and has caused many deaths and destruction in the city.

In recent decades, floods have regularly occurred in China’s Yangtze and Yellow River basins during the summer months. Officially, the Chinese Communist Party blames these disasters on heavy rains or typhoons. But experts say it is China’s dams that are causing the problem. We look into China’s very serious dam problem and what it means for the future of the country.
